Walks Near Abingdon

 

The market town of Abingdon is home to The Crown and Thistle. Sat on the River Thames, there are plenty of waterway walks to chose from. Blenheim Palace with its extensive grounds offers stunning scenic walks and there are many Oxfordshire towns and villages to explore on foot.

 
 

The Thames Path - Abingdon-on-Thames to Wallingford

This famous route travels over 180 miles along the River Thames. The stretch from Abingdon is a 13.5 mile walk that passes through Culham, around the historic Wittenham clumps and alongside two abbeys – the remains of Abingdon Abbey and the great abbey church of Dorchester-on-Thames. The walk finishes in the market town of Wallingford.

 
 

Abingdon waterways

This is a circular 8.5 mile walk starting, and ending, at Culham Lock. It passes through the heart of medieval Abingdon, including the Almshouses, St Helens Wharf and church and through the villages of Drayton and Sutton Courtenay.

 
 

Woodstock and Blenheim Palace

A 25 minute drive from the Crown and Thistle, this is a 6.5 mile circular walk starting in the historic town of Woodstock, passing over the River Glyme, through Old Woodstock and into the grounds of Blenheim Park. Take in the beautiful views of the lake, Grand Bridge and the Palace in the background. The route passes by the ‘Harry Potter Tree’, a 300 year old Cedar of Lebanon tree, which sits alone by the lake where part of the ‘Order of the Phoenix’ was filmed.

Walk.About.Abingdon is a guided tour around historic Abingdon. The tour takes about an hour and a half and visits all of the important historic buildings in the town such as the 10th century St Helen’s Church, the 15th century Abingdon Bridge and the 18th century Abingdon County Hall Museum.
