The Crown and Thistle is a great destination for a family break away. Set in the heart of Abingdon there are activities right on the doorstep to keep the family entertained. In sunny weather cool down in the local outdoor pool and splash park or on rainy days the local cinema is just round the corner. Other outdoor activities such as paddle gondolas on the Thames, a railway centre and farm offer families fun-packed days out where memories are made.

Abbey Meadows

The recreation area runs alongside the River Thames and provides a scenic play space for families. There is an outdoor pool, splash park (seasonal) and play area with a wooden fort and climbing tunnels. The Abbey gardens, next to the meadow site is a peaceful area with formal gardens, a folly and a lake.

Millets Farm

Set in 500 acres of farmland, Millets Farm offers a wide variety of activities for the family. The Falconry centre has daily flying demonstrations. A carousel and indoor soft play as well as large variety of Pick Your Own fruits will keep the children entertained. Next to the fishing lakes, the animal walkway allows visitors to see goats, rheas, sheep, pigs and alpacas, which leads to a duck pond. During the school summer holidays, the ‘maize mazes’ area offers go-karts, trampolines and crazy golf.

Didcot Railway Centre

The living museum of the Great Western Railway encompasses 200 years of railway heritage set in 21 acres. Visitors can get up close to steam and diesel locomotives and their carriages, explore engine sheds, signalling boxes, experience turntable demos and book unlimited steam train rides. A 7 mile drive from the Crown and Thistle.

The Abbey Cinema

The Abbey Cinema is only a minute’s walk from the Crown and Thistle. This is a small, independent venue showing the latest films.

Oxford paddle gondolas

Paddle gondolas can be hired by the hour and offer a great opportunity to see the countryside while leisurely cruising up the River Thames. Fun for all the family to take turns at peddling and steering while having a picnic or refreshments in the open air. Electric punts are also available. A 15 minute drive from the Crown and Thistle.
